Tuesday, 14 September 2010
importYour decision to import from China may be the key to establishing a new business opportunity or profit growth. It is becoming easier and easier to import from China, due to increasing globalisation and international trade technology.

However, it may take years to fully understand local rules, the power of local relationships and overall Chinese business philosophy. In the meantime, read these tips before you import from China:

1. Choose your supplier carefully. Attending trade shows and international business fairs is an effective way to meet potential suppliers. This also gives you a glimpse of the communication process when you do eventually import from China.

2. Unless the supplier can prove they are an authorised reseller, do not order counterfeit or branded products. Confirm the supplier is authorized by contacting the brand owner.

3. Know your terminology and be specific. This is particularly important in specifying the product's quality. Eg: clarification of "leather" versus "genuine leather".

4. Ensure all products you import from China comply with government regulations of the destination country. Failure to fulfill product compliances may significantly delay custom clearing process and result in high and unexpected customs taxes.

5. Have good Chinese partners. If you want to successfully import from China, you will need people on the ground with local contacts and local business savvy.

6. Make sure you have a contract in English and Chinese before you import from China. You should know exactly who you are paying the money to.

7. If you've just started to import from China to your country, pay attention to payment terms. A letter of credit is often used in trade with the import suppliers in China. Contact your bank for details.

8. Have a good estimate of the landing cost before placing your order with a supplier in China. There may be hidden costs in the chain, so consult with a good import management company for assistance. A simple strategy is to make a small test order.

9. The goods you are going to import from China may need to be packed in wooden crates for safe transportation. Standard fumigation could be required before entering the destination country. Discuss with your freight broker for details.

10. Lastly, do not rush into anything. Though there may be pressure to speed up, give yourself a long lead time for thorough research. The product may even be cheaper the next month or through a different supplier.
