Heading into the year of the hard working Ox, AustCham Shanghai continues to emphasise a strong program of networking and business information events Shanghai World Expo 2010 and emerging second-tier city investment destination updates, Australia Day for the community, Corporate Golf Day to ease the stress, and great keynote speakers. Dynamic direction as we face current business challenges is being particularly livened up through the Industry Working Groups in Transport and Logistics and Education and Training. Global financial crisis outcomes impact markedly in China. AustCham Shanghai’s critical focus this year is supporting membership with the latest news and realistic business opportunity updates and networking. AustCham Shanghai provides a lively Australia-China business community hub sharing interests and concerns in these difficult times. End of year 2008 highlights included Small Business, Financial Services and Women in Business “mixers” joining with friends from Shanghai’s other chambers, a briefing from the Australian Consul General in Shanghai, Mr Tom Connor, a rousing farewell to Aussie Drinks Sponsor Le Royal Meridien Shanghai at the Aussie Drinks Christmas Party and a sell out gourmet luncheon with Australian Chef Maggie Beer at iconic restaurant Mesa Manifesto. Making a Difference 2008 saw increased community outreach support from AustCham Shanghai membership with over AUSD 150,000 contributed to a wide range of projects including heart surgeries through Rotary Gift of Life, refurbishment of Wuzhong Mental Hospital and Jinshan Elderly Peoples Residence, major contributions to the Australian led Baoji Xinxing Aid for Street Kids earthquake relief program, re-equipping of the earthquake damaged Sangzao No.1 Primary School and aid for 35 low income families in the Shanghai region. AustCham Shanghai proudly thanks membership for their unprecedented volunteer and fundraising support to help devastated communities and families in China. Australia Day 2009 Sorting out the annual Chinese New Year overlap in dates meant Shanghai’s Australia Day this year was celebrated on Saturday February 7, at the now traditional AustCham Shanghai Australia Day Family BBQ. Shanghai’s economic anxieties are high but if anything could brighten things up then the recent visit of Australian “cooking idol” Maggie Beer was a winner, reports AustCham Shanghai Chairman Stephen White.
