2010: Lowy Institute Poll
Monday, 31 May 2010

lowy_thumbMore than 50 percent of Australians believe the government is allowing too much investment from China according to the 2010 Lowy Institute poll.

The report, ‘Australia and the World, Public Opinion and Foreign Policy,’ found 57 percent of those surveyed believed Australia was allowing too much investment from China – up from 50 percent in 2009. Only 34 percent of respondents said Australia was allowing 'about the right amount of investments from China’ (down from 42 percent in 2009) while only 3 percent said Australia was not allowing enough investment from China.
However the report did find that the majority of Australians – 73 percent – agreed China’s growth had been good for Australia – a 10 percent increase since 2008.
In relationship to China’s growth, 69 percent of Australians said China’s aim was to dominate Asia (up from 60 percent from 2008) and 55 percent agreed Australia should join with other countries to limit China’s influence.
Another finding of the report showed 46 percent of Australians consider China will be a military threat to Australia in the next 20 years.
Australians remained divided over America’s role with China – with 45 percent agreeing the United States should give China a larger say in regional affairs, and 49 percent disagreeing.
