The MoU between Austrade’s Regional Director for North East Asia, Laurie Smith, and the Mayor of the Changsha Municipal Government, Mr Jianfei Zhang, (pictured) is expected to enhance opportunities for Australian companies in the green sector in line with China’s commitment to a more sustainable future. Under the project, Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, is set to be linked up to two neighbouring cities Zhujiang and Xiangtan to form an urban centre of 13 million. The Changsha government has already committed US$5 billion to the project which will encompass the construction of commercial, hospitality, healthcare, educational, recreational, industrial and residential buildings as well as major infrastructure such as Mass Rapid Transport systems connecting provincial capitals to the coast. “The MOU covers a wide range of sustainable development areas including green building and construction, emissions reduction technologies, environmental planning and consultation services, waste treatment and disposal and trade and financial services related to sustainable city management,” Mr Smith said. The redevelopment of Changsha City is considered a pilot project under the Chinese Government’s strategy to build further sustainable cities across the country. Austrade has identified several Chinese inland cities – or tier 2 cities – including Changsha, as areas of strong potential for Australian companies hoping to deliver their green building expertise. Major Australian companies including Woods Bagot, GHD and Page Kirkland Group are already benefiting from Changsha’s redevelopment. |
