A recent poll has found that 50 percent of Australians believe there is too much Chinese investment in Australia and almost half said the Australian government should actively work to limit China's power.
The fifth annual "Australia and the World" poll conducted by the Lowy Institute for International Policy found half of Australians believed Chinese investment in Australia was too high, while 42 percent said it was “about right.” The poll suggested that there was a cooling off in Australian attitudes towards China, with this year’s respondents ranking their feelings towards the economic powerhouse at a "lukewarm" 53 degrees, compared to 61 degrees in 2006. Australian feelings toward New Zealand ranked 83 degrees, and the United States – 67. According to the poll, the majority of Australians surveyed said they did not believe China would become a military threat to Australia in the next 20 years, but 41 percent said it was likely while 40 percent also felt the development of China as a world power was a critical threat to Australia's vital interests, up 15 percent since 2006. |
