China has surpassed New Zealand and Britain to become Australia's biggest source of migrants according to recent immigration figures.
In the four months to October 2009, a record 6350 migrants arrived from mainland China, compared to 5800 from Britain and 4740 from New Zealand. China’s ascendancy to top position is attributed to falls in migration from the UK and New Zealand during the economic crisis as people opted to keep jobs rather than risk unemployment in Australia as well as an Australian government decision in March 2009 to cut 18,500 places from the skilled migration program. Chinese migration is dominated by family reunions and rose 15 percent compared over the same the same period in 2008. Arrivals from the UK fell 28 percent and 47 percent from New Zealand. |
