Chinese millionaires hit 825,000
Wednesday, 15 April 2009

There are now 825,000 millionaires in China according to the 2009 results of the Hurun Report’s annual China Rich List.

According to figures released in this year’s Hurun 2009 Wealth Report, China has 825,000 individuals with a personal wealth in excess of RMB 10 million  (US$1.46 million) and 51,000 with personal wealth of more than RMB 100 million (US$14.6 million).
Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai accounted for 48 percent of Mainland Chinese millionaires, with Beijing topping the list. Beijing has 143,000 millionaires followed by Gaungdong province with 137,000, Shanghai in third place with 116,000, followed by Zhejiang province with 110,500 millionaires.

"The Hurun Wealth Report shows the increased importance of China’s second- and third-tier cities for brands looking to tap China’s high-end consumers,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and publisher of the Hurun Report. “With this growth in wealth comes a surge in self-confidence driving China’s wealthy to continue to spend, despite the economic crisis,” he said.

A Hurun survey of 67 Chinese millionaires in February, showed that 82 percent felt their lifestyles had not been impacted by the global financial crisis.
The report found that the average age of a Chinese individual with personal wealth of 10 million yuan was 39 years old, while the average Chinese person with personal wealth of 100 million yuan is 43 years old.
According to the Hurun 2009 Best of the Best Survey, the top three hobbies of China’s wealthy are travel, swimming and golf. Preferred international travel destinations are the US, Australia and France, and within China, Yunnan, Sanya and Hong Kong.

China’s rich are now spending 50 percent more time on leisure travel, whilst a third now take more than 20 days holiday a year.
The Hurun Report is one of China’s leading luxury business magazines.
