More effective consumer protection and stronger, simpler regulation are two of the main findings from an interim report into education services for overseas students released by the Hon Bruce Baird in December.
The Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 interim report found international students should be given more support, better information and improved complaint handling services after receiving 150 written submissions and feedback from more than 300 people in an online forum. The head of the review, Bruce Baird, held forums with almost 200 students and providers from the tertiary and ELICOS and school sectors. He also met with provider and student peak bodies, regulators and state and territory government officials. The feedback will contribute towards a final report to be released early this year and comes as Australia battles to reclaim its reputation as an international destination of quality education. The commissioning of the report follows scathing reports in the Indian media over safety fears for international students studying in Australia and a lack of regulation in the private college sector. Last year, Australia’s largest private college group in Australia, Global Campus Management Group, was one of several private colleges to close down, when it went into voluntary administration after failing to repay debts of A$20 million – leaving thousands of international students stranded in Sydney and Melbourne. Global Campus Management Group, a provider of international education in the secondary school, English language and vocational education and training sector included the GCM Fashion Institute, the Meridian International School, Meridian International Hotel School, International Design School and Meridian College. |
