Melbourne Victory was defending its title for the Lord Mayor’s Cup but lost to Tianjin Teda 2-1 after being forced to play one man down when Archie Thompson was controversially sent off. Melbourne Victory Coach Ernie Merrick praised the team’s efforts but said he was particularly disappointed at losing the Lord Mayor’s Cup – named in honour of Melbourne’s sister city relationship with Tianjin. Melbourne Victory was plagued with injury throughout the two-match tournament with injured players Steven Pace and Ney Fabiano requiring further scans upon their return to Australia. Tianjin currently sits fifth on the CSL ladder. Days earlier Melbourne Victory lost its first match in China to Guangzhou Pharmaceutical 2-1. |
