Nanjing Zoo opens Australia exhibit
Sunday, 01 November 2009

Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo has formerly opened its Australian exhibit, now home to a number of native Australian animals including kangaroos and emus. The zoo has worked closely with zoologist and founder of the Golden Bird Foundation’s Dr Carin Harrington to develop an enclosure featuring environmentally friendly water and land designs.

GBF is a Hong-Kong based charity focused on designing and funding projects committed to installing best-in-class enclosures and exhibits in Chinese zoos to enhance animal welfare. The organisation also co-ordinates exchange programs for Chinese zoo keepers to Chester Zoo in the UK and plans to fund further international educational and professional training for zoo staff from Nanjing Zoo to visit Australia and the UK in 2010.
Meanwhile, Chinese media has announced that Adelaide Zoo will receive a pair of giant pandas from China by the end of the year. The assurance was made during Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang’s recent visit to Australia during a meeting with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard. The chosen pair, Wangwang and Funi, currently reside at the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
