Australia Asia Endeavour Awards

The first round application process for the Prime Minister’s 2010 Australia Asia Endeavour Awards – an initiative in response to last year’s 2020 Summit – has begun. Under the project, 40 scholarships will be awarded annually to Australian graduate and postgraduate level university students to undertake one year of study in Asia followed by an internship or work placement.

International education exports up 23%

Figures released in May by the Australian Bureau of Statistics Trade in Services shows international education contributed A$15.5 billion in export income to the Australian economy in 2008.
The figure is a 23.4 percent increase on the 2007 figure of $12.6 billion.

Shanghai World Expo 2010: Supplying the Australian Pavilion

International Venue Group, which has been appointed by DFAT to oversee all staffing, retail and operations services of the Australian pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010, is now accepting registration for the procurement of a variety of products - from retail to food and beverage, operational and furniture equipment and VIP functions.

Coming Home raises A$100,000+ for bushfire appeal

Art work worth more than A$250,000 from 29 Chinese Australian artists has been donated to a Beijing art gallery to raise funds for the Victorian bushfire appeal. The works form part of the 'Coming Home' exhibition, an initiative of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and is the largest exhibition of Chinese Australian contemporary art ever to be shown in China.

Visa changes for 60th anniversary

Business visitors applying for long-term visas to China are encountering similar hassles to visa applications made in the lead up to the Olympic Games last year. While there has been no official acknowledgement that tighter visa restrictions are in place, some visa agencies have confirmed that all new Chinese business visas are required to expire on or before September 15 – two weeks before China celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Global economic crisis fails to shake faith of Australian business in globalisation

Despite big changes in the world economic environment in the past 12 months, the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation’s 2009 Global Readiness index has found Australian companies continue to actively explore offshore expansion opportunities for their businesses.

Angus Armour, EFIC Managing Director & CEO says access to larger markets around the world and the opportunity to participate in global supply chains were the major drivers for the 726 globally active Australian businesses which took part in this year’s survey.

"Our 2009 survey reveals that despite the headwinds of the global economic downturn, offshore expansion remains a strategic imperative for Australian businesses,” he said.
