UTS receives A$25 M donation for new business faculty
Saturday, 10 July 2010

dr_chao_chak_wing_thumbThe University of Technology Sydney has received a A$25 million donation from Chinese business leader Dr Chau Chak Wing, for its new Faculty of Business building.

Dr Chao Chak Wing, the Chairman of Kingold Group, has donated $20 million to support the new Faculty of Business Building and an additional $5 million to create an endowment fund for student scholarships.

Dr Chau is a leading philanthropist in the Asia-Pacific region and the donation is considered one of the largest ever made to an Australian business school.

The new UTS Faculty of Business building, to be designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, will be named the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building.

UTS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ross Milbourne, said the university was honoured by its relationship with Dr Chau and his family and was “humbled by this extraordinary act of generosity.”

"Dr Chau’s generosity not only supports our ambition to build a world-class campus, it also makes possible Australia-China academic exchange opportunities, which helps students expand their global vision. This gift reflects Dr Chau’s leadership in business, education and Australia-China relations,” Professor Milbourne said.

Dr Chau said he believed in UTS’s vision and commitment to excellence.  dr_chao_chak_wing_and_frank_gehry

"I hope this gift continues to inspire global excellence and encourage others to support the education sector, in particular UTS.  It is an honour to be associated with UTS and internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry and my family and I look forward to a long, enduring friendship with the University,” Dr Chau said.

The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013 at a total cost of $150 million. Scholarships from the Dr Chau Chak Wing Scholarship Fund will be advertised in 2012.
