Business visitors applying for long-term visas to China are encountering similar hassles to visa applications made in the lead up to the Olympic Games last year. While there has been no official acknowledgement that tighter visa restrictions are in place, some visa agencies have confirmed that all new Chinese business visas are required to expire on or before September 15 – two weeks before China celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Visas that are affected include the six-month two-entry or multiple entry F visa and one year F visa. Student and tourist visas remain unaffected but application times could take longer than usual. This year, China is marking several key and sensitive milestones including ten years since the first Falun Gong crackdown, the twentieth anniversary of Tiananmen Square in June and the 60 year anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1. Tighter security arrangements are also anticipated in the lead up to the October National Day celebrations.  |
