(b) Knowledge of the Chinese arts and cultural scene, sufficient to be able to advise the Embassy and relevant Australian organisations on mounting cultural activities in China. (c) Ability to organise major cultural and other events, involving negotiation with service providers, liaison with other organisations, planning, issuing invitations and implementation. (d) Native English. (e) Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including the ability to write reports on Section activities. (f) Strong Chinese-language skills, including the ability to accurately translate reasonably complex materials, and to undertake informal interpreting for meetings, etc. (g) Ability to organise and prioritise workloads and budgets so as to complete given projects and assignments in a timely and cost-effective manner. (h) Ability to communicate with the public and Embassy contacts in a professional, helpful and courteous manner under all circumstances. (i) Initiative; flexibility; adaptability; ability to operate effectively with members of the work team, including in high pressure situations. At the direction of the Counsellor (Public Affairs and Culture), and the Manager, Public Affairs, assist with the work of the Public Affairs and Culture Section, and in particular take a lead role on the development and implementation of its cultural program, including: Cultural Program • Provide advice and assistance to Australian cultural organisations wishing to mount cultural events or establish cultural relationships in China. • Identify options and arrange small and large-scale cultural events for the Embassy to assist it with representational activities, such as art exhibitions, performances and literary festivals. • Support the implementation of the Year of Australian Culture in China 2010-11 and related activities. • Manage the Section's on-going film promotional activities, including organisation of film-related events and support for Screen Australia, including with respect to the development of co-productions. • Prepare brief reports on the outcomes of cultural events. • Prepare publicity materials for Embassy events including media releases, banners, programmes, catalogues, and posters. • Monitor developments in both the Australian and Chinese arts industries. • Assist with fundraising process for various cultural events including liaising with sponsors, funding applications and timely funds acquittals, managing sponsor benefits
• On occasion, organise media events such as media conferences, promotional activities, etc, and assist with management of media work associated with high-level visits. • Prepare talking points and speeches on a variety of topics on behalf of the Ambassador and other senior staff. • Assist with proof-reading English-language materials prepared by the Section. • Assist with reporting on public affairs activities as required. • Assist the Public Affairs Manager with other media activities as required. Translation and Interpreting • Assist with translation of materials from English to Chinese and Chinese to English. • Undertake informal interpreting, as required, and conduct meetings in Chinese.
