Hiking along one of Hong Kong's many walking trails gives tourists a new impression of this Asian economic hub writes Sophie Loras.

Hong Kong may be famous for its nightlife, shopping and colourful markets but there is a lot more to the island than just bars and nightclubs. Those travelling to the island for business or pleasure may be surprised to learn that 70 percent of Hong Kong (including the New Territories) is green land and trekking along the many trails is one of the most popular activities among locals and expatriates.

"Hiking is actually very popular because it is very accessible," says Hong Kong Tourism Board spokesperson Mayee Tang.

Hong Kong has four major hiking trails (Hong Kong, Wilson, MacLehose and Lantau) and many other smaller walks. There are close to 30 walking trails in and around the city centre alone. Walks range in levels from easy and for all ages to varying degrees of difficulty.

For visitors who only have two hours to devote to a walk, Tang recommends the traditional Peak walk. The walk is easy with rewarding views of Victoria Harbour.

Other sightseeing combinations include taking a ferry out to places such as Lama Island, famous for its walks and seafood and just 40 minutes from Hong Kong by boat, Cheng Chau with its charming alleys, temples and beaches, and Lantau Island, home to the Giant Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery - renowned for its quaint vegetarian meals.
